Leading for Transformation

Happy Chinese year of the horse Reader,

I know I told you last week that I was going to take a break, but I wanted to share a new upcoming project with you first, as the dedicated subscribers of this crazy little newsletter. So this isn't an in-depth edition (I can hear your sigh of relief ;), and it will arrive in your inbox while I'm meditating, that's the magic of scheduling emails. Also, I’d love to understand what this newsletter means to you.

Upcoming course: Leading in Transformation

If you're a long-term subscriber, you might know the Writing for Transformation course I've run four times. It's where we practised a decolonial approach to storytelling, in a global cohort of journalists, CSOs, writing-enthusiasts, and creators.

This year, I'm applying the same lens to leadership. Most of my career, I've been a manager, and I want to share practical ways to lead that centre equity, well-being, and editorial decision-making.

What is it:

  • Six online live sessions with guest speakers from different areas in media and editorial roles, for people who make editorial and public-facing choices (editors, founders, product and comms leads, mid-level media managers).
  • We work on positionality and equitable practice. Just like in Writing for Transformation, you'll learn the basics of decoloniality and how to apply it in your leadership.
  • Session outcomes include: a one-page positionality note (who you are as a leader), a (re)draft of your organization’s mission/vision, a collaborative practice map, a simple budget plan for your team or project, and a workflow audit (what’s automated vs human reviewed, what are ethical risks).
  • You'll discuss productivity and all things leadership that the global cohort will bring to the table. As in other courses, the focus is on adult learning and highlighting the expertise present in the group.
  • You'll leave with a decision map with (at least) one implementable change and a simple plan to test it in your team or audience.

📆 First session on April 23, after that weekly on Thursday
⏰ Each session is about 2 - 2,5 hours at 2 PM CET
🎥 Recordings available
👩🏻‍🏫 2 scholarships available (tick the box in the sign up form)

The course is live now, but before I start full marketing, I want to give my subscribers the first opportunity to join.

Well-being series

Since I'm meditating myself at the moment, I'm resharing last year's newsletters about well-being:

Cracks Magazine

A group of alumni from the Writing for Transformation course contributed to the first edition of Cracks.Mag that was published in November. Please have a read and let me know if you'd like to contribute. It's a voluntary project (for now) focusing on systemic media critique and offering innovative and decolonial approaches to storytelling.

Click on one of the pictures to read the PDF. I presented Cracks.Mag at the World Conference for Science Journalists in Pretoria in December.

Sorry if this was too much of a marketing email for you; I don't plan to make it a habit!

I want to make the Inclusive Journalism Newsletter more useful and sharper. Three quick questions that will take you 2 minutes:

Hope to see you next week ❤️

We kicked off with an incredibly interesting cohort of editorial leaders from around the world (Romania, Malaysia, India, France, Uganda, and Turkey). Guest speakers Aphrodite Salas and Darshini Kandasamy set the tone in the first two sessions. More editions coming, watch this space! And if you're...

Selamat sore from Bali, Reader, I just arrived last night, still a bit jet-lagged, but it’s good to be back! This newsletter arrives much later in your inbox due to travel and limited Wi-Fi at Chinese airports. In the coming weeks, I'm facilitating a course with “leadership” in the title, which is a little awkward for someone who spends a lot of time writing about...

Buongiorno from Bologna, Reader, I arrived here after attending the yearly journalism festival in Perugia. I’m leaving out the word “international”; read more about that below. It’s been a wild few days packed with meetings with old and new friends. The beauty of this festival is that journalism expertise fills the streets of the old center, and it’s easy to connect over a coffee or...
